License MGH the Play
In March 2020, New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development produced Making Gay History: Before Stonewall, a documentary theater play adapted from the Making Gay History book and podcast by playwright and professor Joe Salvatore. The play had a sold-out eight-performance run at the Provincetown Playhouse in Greenwich Village. Read about the production here.
Making Gay History: Before Stonewall bears witness to the rich history of activism, organizing, and resistance that preceded the 1969 Stonewall uprising and weaves together the voices of twenty pioneers who blazed a trail for LGBTQ equality—from Harry Hay to Sylvia Rivera, from Ernestine Eckstein to Shirley Willer.
